Silver lining for suppliers

ARTICLE TOOLS

By  Dan Reichard

We talk about how escalating gas prices are favorably affecting ridership.  Little is said about the other favorable fallout: how the flurry of ridership increases has pushed transit services beyond capacity, forcing agencies to bolster their fleets.

It’s a good sign for the suppliers to the public transit industry who find themselves scurrying to meet public agencies' demand for more equipment -- or at the very least try to speed up deliveries.  It’s a public hardship that has turned into a good situation for the manufacturers, and a situation much needed by industry suppliers -- a big boost to the overall economy.

Until next time,

Dan

Hopefully this can reverse the trend to off shore mfg. (& resulting heavy unemployment here) as when bids for cars for the re-established LA to Long Beach line received ZERO US builders bids a couple of years ago! Kawasaki won the award
& their cars are in service. Now it should be our turn!

It's about time, the public transportation system stopped outsourceing the purchase of equipment for our mass transit systems.

Domestic manufacturers hopefully will recognize that, with the collapse of the Dollar on world currency markets, their products have a built-in price advantage, and will start to submit bids. If no-one bids (as in the LA-Long beach rail project cited by Mr. Borisoff) then the agency can hardly be faulted for going abroad.

Will our bankers collectively finance the costs of rampting up production? Let's hope so.
