D.C. Metro launches anti-terrorism effort

Blue TIDE included a number of security sweeps and patrols at the Union Station Metrorail station and Metrobus boarding area outside of Union Station. Also served to remind the public to remain observant while riding Metro and report any suspicious behavior.

Will increase surveillance of the Metro system, conduct more frequent security sweeps of facilities and tunnels, and provide greater visibility of uniformed officers.

DHS awards $78 million for transit security programs

Will be used to hire new law enforcement officers and by police departments with dedicated transit bureaus to hire anti-terrorism personnel, purchase anti-terrorism equipment and obtain and train explosive detection canines.

To date, more than thirty Automated External Defibrillators have been installed on trains to protect passenger safety. The entire fleet will be equipped by the end of spring.

Washington Metro begins bag inspections

The Metro Transit Police anticipate conducting random bag searches under the Security Inspection Program when circumstances warrant heightened vigilance. Police will take steps to ensure that there will be no discernible pattern to these inspections.

TriMet to increase security measures

The agency will expand its staff to include more police officers and field supervisors, and will add more security cameras.
