Repair backlog jeopardizes transit service demand

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Aging U.S. transit systems are faced with an $80 billion maintenance backlog that jeopardizes service just as ridership is rising due to high gas prices and the sluggish economy. Decades of deferred repairs and modernization projects have many transit agencies scrambling to keep trains and buses in operation, the AP reported.
