As funding from state and federal agencies continues to be more difficult to secure, local transit systems have found a variety of new partners that not only help pay for new hours of service, but can also provide opportunities for transit agencies to restructure service in parts of the community. These partnerships can also result in improving the transit agency’s image and relevance in a community, and improved quality of service.
Campus transit operators offer a wide range of additional transit options, ranging from charter bus services to partnerships with Greyhound and Megabus to coordinating with Amtrak for students going home for the holidays. Additionally, one operator extended its late-night demand-response service for students who stay on campus during Thanksgiving and winter breaks.
Taking measures to accommodate growing ridership, dealing with driver staffing shortages and introducing new bus routes and vehicle features are keeping university transit operators busy as the Fall semester gets under way.
Some university transportation system operators we interviewed said they allow exterior bus advertising to bring in more revenue or to promote the university. Others say that being based in areas with small advertising markets means extra effort but not revenue.
