Houston Metro asking for bigger piece of sales tax

Posted on April 27, 2012

HOUSTON — The Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro) plans to ask voters in a referendum slated for the November ballot to decide whether more of a current 1% sales tax should go toward transit or continue diverting part of it for road projects, chron.com reported.

The agency could use the full tax for projects such as new bus shelters and light rail lines. However, the partner governments that appoint Metro's board members rely on their quarter share of the sales tax. By 2014, an estimated $2.7 billion will have been shifted from transit for general mobility work. For the full story, click here.
