Calif.-based Montebello Bus Lines (MBL) awarded Avail Technologies, provider of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology, a $3.1 million contract for installation of a new Passenger Information System.

Implementation of the new system will begin this fall and will enable MBL riders to obtain real-time bus information via mobile phone applications and Web-based applications, as well as the ability to receive email rider alert notifications.

MBL bus stops will be uniquely identified by a number and a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone to identify a location. The project is fully funded by grants received by the Federal Transit Administration.

Avail Technologies will install equipment on board each of MBL’s 66 buses, inside transit operations supervisor vehicles and at Montebello Bus Lines’ facility.

The company will begin design and installation of the Passenger Information System in November, with full implementation scheduled to be completed over the next 18 months.
