CHICAGO — A study by the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University suggests that at least $2 billion a year in spending is needed to keep the Chicago area’s aging mass transit system in working order, reported CBS Chicago.
CTA and Metra’s equipment is badly deteriorating, according to DePaul professor Joe Schwieterman, a co-author of the study. The study was commissioned by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, which is looking to persuade lawmakers in Springfield, Ill. and Washington, D.C., to provide a steady and predictable funding stream for capital improvements on the area’s public transit systems.
