Calif. transit district prepares for rail safety project

SAN DIEGO — North County Transit District’s (NCTD) upcoming federally mandated rail-safety project will include the installation of fiber optic cable and other infrastructure along 19 miles of San Diego County’s coastal rail line, reports U-T San Diego.

NCTD considered a $5.2 million contract this month with MP Nexlevel of California to install the cables. The computer-based safety project would help prevent disasters, such as the 2008 Metrolink train collision with a Union Pacific freighter that killed 26 people.
