N.Y. MTA to swap out hybrid bus engines for diesel

NEW YORK CITY — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) plans to pull back on its hybrid program, taking about one-fourth of its 1,677 diesel-electric hybrid buses and swapping out their hybrid engines for newer diesel ones, according to an International Business Times report.

The main reason for the swap is financial, as warranties expire on the hybrid engines, the city will have to take on the added cost of maintaining hybrid systems, the report said. For the full story, click here. digg it stumble upon newsvine

    "Hybrid Engines" - I am not sure what this means. The engines are not hybrid, the propulsion system is hybrid, using batteries and electric motors and generators instead of a traditional transmission with gears. This may have to do more with the skill level of the bus mechanic than the technology. I have a hybrid car that cost less to maintain.

    This has nothing to do with the Mechanics ability or skill set to maintain these vehicles. The simple fact is a conventional Diesel engine and transmission drive trane is much more cost efficient to maintain and or replace if the need should arise. The current Diesel engine used to power the hybrid traction generator would not be sufficient In a non hybrid powered bus. The astronomical cost to replace failing traction motors and energy storage systems is the primary reason for these conversions
