Proposed UTA rail line may run from U. of Utah to airport

SALT LAKE CITY — A new planned Utah Transit Authority (UTA) TRAX line may directly connect the University of Utah, downtown Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake City International Airport, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. The transit system received a $2 million Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement grant for the project.

The rail line would be built using existing tracks, and need no new construction, except for some minor signal work.

However, Michael Allegra, GM, UTA, told the paper that the estimated operating cost is about $2 million a year. That means that the agency must come up with nearly another $4 million to run the line for at least the three years required by the grant before it could open. For the full story, click here.
