CAF USA previously informed the city it will not meet the original deadline, and now plans to deliver the first of five streetcar vehicles on Oct. 30, 43 days late. Under the contract, that would mean CAF USA would be expected to pay $43,000 in fines to the city.
More than 30 additional railcars are on the way and will be here in the weeks leading up to the April opening of two new Metro rail lines. The railcars, which were part of a $153 million contract with CAF USA, were delivered eight months late.
Final assembly and testing is to be performed at CAF’s manufacturing facility in Elmira Heights, N.Y. Delivery of the new Green Line cars will take place between the end of 2017 and 2018.
The $298.1 million order for 130 single-level long-distance passenger railcars includes 25 sleepers, 25 diners, 25 baggage/dormitory, and 55 baggage cars. More than 120 suppliers in 25 states and 93 cities are providing parts for the new railcars.
Expressed concern that the contract will send jobs to Japan. L.A. Metro officials said that the agency required the contract winner to create jobs in the U.S. and that all three bidders committed to doing final assembly of the cars in Los Angeles County.
