$57M San Francisco Central Subway subcontract awarded

Layne Christensen Co.’s Geoconstruction division received a contract from Tutor Perini Corp. to build the foundation for three underground subway stations. The two-year contract is scheduled to start in early 2014.

Funds provided by the California Transportation Commission. The Central Subway plans tie directly into future high-speed rail service at the 4th and King station. It will also be three blocks from the Transbay Transit Center, the planned terminus for high-speed rail.

The Central Subway Project will receive $48.4 million in state funds, allowing for continued progress on extending the T Third Line. The Persia Triangle Project, which will improve pedestrian amenities and transit circulation at three intersections, will receive $675,734.

San Francisco awards $57.2M for Central Subway Project

Funds will make possible the purchase of two tunnel boring machines and construction of the tunnel launch box. The Central Subway is Phase 2 of the Third Street Light Rail Project, which has consistently received positive reviews as part of the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts program.
