Va. Beach likely to have to repay $20M intended for light rail extension

In November, voters roundly rejected light rail in an advisory referendum, so the city must decide what to do with the old 10.6-mile Norfolk Southern right-of-way, which was purchased in 2010 for the project and included a $20 million investment from the state.

Chicago to ease rail congestion with $126M ARRA grant

The Illinois DOT will invest the funds in the Englewood Flyover, a grade separation project south of Chicago Union Station that eliminates one of the most delay-prone intersections in the entire Amtrak system. It separates Rock Island District Metra commuter trains from Amtrak passenger trains traveling on the Norfolk Southern corridor.

N.C. DOT begins rail upgrade program

The agreement with Norfolk Southern Railway Co., Amtrak and N.C. Railroad Co. is supported by $461 million in ARRA funds, and will include upgrades to tracks and bridges; crossing safety improvements; station expansions in four cities; and construction of a maintenance facility in Charlotte. The funding also will enable North Carolina to improve the speed and reliability of passenger service.

Contributing to the accident, was the relief engineer's failure to immediately communicate to the engineer that he had miscalled the signal at Englewood and to stop the train when the engineer did not respond to her expressed concern.
