Metro Transit Police Chief Harrington said in a statement that it's not his agency's practice to inquire about immigration status and has asked for an internal investigation into the encounter.

The train dragged the passenger van approximately a quarter of a mile after the collision. Police say the vehicle entered the gate crossing before the train was coming, stopped inside the crossing then waited for the train to arrive and moved onto the tracks.
