Adds an additional 76,000 square feet of space, bringing the total campus to nearly 400,000 square feet of manufacturing capacity.
U.S. transit agencies can now use FTA funding in support of their purchases of the company's 60-foot electric bus rapid transit buses.
Buses are equipped with 480-kilowatt batteries, and will also feature the latest onboard video surveillance systems.
The buses will support Grand Rapids’ second new BRT line, with funding provided by the FTA and the Michigan DOT.
The buses will replace older buses that have reached service lifespan and are a part of a $12 million investment in service changes that will introduce BRT in 2019.
The award includes the zero-emission buses and supporting charging equipment, and was supported by FTA's Low-No program.
The opening follows from New Flyer’s announcement in Nov. 2017 to invest $28 million in the state.
The buses represent executed options from New Flyer’s contract with RTC, which began in 2015.
The buses are also low-floor vehicles capable of “kneeling,” making the boarding process more convenient and fully accessible.
The New Flyer Xcelsior buses have been designed for a special BRT system that improves route capacity and schedule reliability.
