President Bush has nominated Mary Peters, director of the Arizona Department of Transportation, to head the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). If confirmed by the Senate, Peters will become the first woman to lead the FHWA and likely would oversee the reauthorization of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, which expires in 2003.
