Quebec to infuse public transit with $20 million

Posted on January 1, 2001

The government of Quebec plans to improve public transit by adding $20 million and negotiating a new funding arrangement with municipalities, Transport Minister Yvon Marcoux announced Wednesday. Most of the additional money, to be given in 2005, will go to Montreal to help pay for bus and metro service, he said. The transport minister said that more money is needed than the Quebec government alone can afford, reported the CBC news service. It will cost an estimated $4.5 billion over the next decade to maintain existing service alone, Marcoux said. In addition to the money, Marcoux wants to give cities more flexibility on vehicle purchasing decisions and suggests municipalities tax drivers who park in the city to aid financing public transit.
