A dead garter snake, one of an endangered species, stalled construction on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) extension to San Francisco International Airport for the second time, reported The Associated Press. State wildlife officials ordered work stopped on the extension, estimated to cost $1.5 billion, to investigate the death of the red- and black-striped snake. Last fall, the discovery of a dead garter snake near the tracks halted construction for 18 days and cost BART $1.07 million, said the AP. BART has already spent close to $6 million to comply with environmental laws and has relocated more than 75 snakes.
