New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is proposing to open up its books in an effort to make its financial reporting more transparent. MTA Executive Director Katherine Lapp told Newsday that proposed reporting changes were not linked to recent charges that the agency misled the public about its finances to push through a 50-cent subway fare hike. "We stand behind all the actions that we've taken to date," she said. Some of the reporting changes will include posting financial documents on the Internet and the possible hiring of a former federal prosecutor to create a more stringent compliance program.
