Canadian public transit projects are now eligible for funding under the federal government's $1-billion Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF). The fund, announced in Budget 2003, is part of the government's latest $3-billion contribution toward renewing Canada's public infrastructure. The remaining $2 billion adds to the existing Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund, which focuses primarily on large-scale strategic infrastructure in urban areas. The MRIF will be used to respond to the specific needs of Canada's smaller municipalities and rural and remote areas.
