BC Transit in British Columbia will the first transit agency in Canada to put GM's advanced hybrid-electric propulsion system into regular service. BC Transit signed a contract to purchase six 40-foot production hybrid diesel-electric buses manufactured by New Flyer. Delivery is expected in the spring of 2005. The GM hybrid system uses dual electric motors for regenerative braking that slows down the bus and captures the energy into the battery system. It can improve fuel economy by up to 50% and reduce emissions by up to 90% when compared to conventional diesel engines.
