The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has sent notices of possible layoffs to more than 1,000 employees as a result of budget shortfalls.

About 90% of the potential job cutbacks would come at the expense of bus and train operators, according to the United Press International.

Some 1,087 workers have been targeted for layoffs unless Illinois state legislators approve additional funding for CTA by the beginning of next year.

The layoff notices were sent out to comply with union contractual requirements of 60 days notice for layoffs.

The CTA is also considering raised fares and service cutbacks to deal with funding shortages.
