Kansas City will receive the final $4.5 million it needs to implement a bus rapid transit (BRT) system, according to the Kansas City Star.
The entire BRT project, which will cost about $22 million, will get 80% of its funding from the federal level. Additional funding will come from the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and the city government.
The new Metropolitan Area Express, known as MAX, is scheduled to begin running in July 2005.
MAX buses will be equipped with devices to hold green lights longer and shorten red lights. The plan also calls for dedicated lanes, fewer stops and special shelters.
