Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. completed expansion of its smart-card based fare collection system on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) extension of the Blue Line. Cubic's system includes the back office central computer, software and communications, ticket vending and add-fare machines and faregates for the rail stations, as well as parking devices for the new park-and-ride facilities. In 1999, WMATA's Cubic-designed SmarTrip system began service and today has more than 600,000 cardholders.
