About 16,000 commuter rail passengers were without transportation Thursday when a freight derailment shut down Chicago’s Metra system just south of downtown.

Metra canceled 20 inbound and 10 outbound trains on the Rock Island District line that runs between Chicago and Joliet, Ill., the Chicago Tribune reported.

Three Burlington Northern Santa Fe coal train cars derailed at about 5 a.m., spilling their load on the tracks.

No one was injured.
