Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) has been named the general engineering consultant (GEC) for the planning and design of a new light rail transit system in Norfolk, Va. The new double-track system, which will begin construction this summer, will extend 7.4 miles with 10 at-grade stations and one elevated station. As the GEC, PB will be responsible for overall management of the entire planning, design, environmental and permitting process, as well as the oversight of 16 subconsultants and design coordination services during the construction phase. Revenue service for the light rail system is set to start in 2010.
