Gemalto will provide 3.5 million secure contactless transit smart cards to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) for its CharlieCard electronic ticketing initiative. MBTA’s CharlieCard project eliminates the use of paper tickets to ride its bus and subway systems. The cards delivered by Gemalto are fully encoded, which enables the MBTA to distribute the cards to its customers immediately. By the end of March, Gemalto will have delivered 2.4 million secure contactless transit devices for the CharlieCard program to the MBTA.
