Preliminary public transit ridership statistics for 2006 in Canada show a nationwide increase of 3.21 percent, as reported by the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA).

A record 1.7 billion trips were taken on Canadian public transit in 2006, representing an increase of 52.7 million trips over 2005.

CUTA's last national survey of Canadian transit systems reported a $20.7 billion need for public transit capital infrastructure investment for the period 2006-2010. The organization says that the trend in increased ridership will not continue without long-term, predictable investment to increase service.
