Bombardier Transportation has received a firm order from the Metropolitan Council of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn., for 17 Bombardier BiLevel commuter rail vehicles.

The cars will be used for Northstar, a 40-mile commuter rail service extending northwest from downtown Minneapolis along one of the region’s most congested traffic corridors, scheduled to begin service in late 2009.

The contract, which is valued at approximately $44 million, also includes options for up to 64 additional cars. The new vehicles will be built at Bombardier’s production facilities in Thunder Bay, Ontario and Plattsburgh, N.Y. Delivery of the 17 cars is expected to take place between May and August 2009.
