Riverside Transit Agency’s travel training program is effectively steering a growing number of customers away from its costly Dial-A-Ride service as well as saving the agency money along the way.
Staff was prepared, primarily due to the new equipment and training acquired in recent years with federal grant money. Transit operators were able to view real-time footage from system’s several thousand security cameras and live feeds from hundreds of other city- and state-owned cameras, for the first time ever.
Features include locations of bus routes and rail lines close to riders’ locations, information on scheduled and real time bus and rail arrivals, and suggestions for convenient trip routes based on arrival time, transfers and/or walking distance.
Investigators found that Salt Lake Shuttles failed to monitor and ensure that its drivers complied with federal hours-of-service regulations. Drivers frequently made round-trip journeys from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas, a distance of approximately 840 miles, without rest, in violation of hours-of-service rules.
Unveiled the Rambler Route, a pilot van service to provide students with transportation to a number of popular drop-off locations determined by student phone calls received by the university’s 8-Ride transportation service.
A campus shuttle ran over a student who was crossing the street against a “Don’t Walk” sign. The bus driver claimed to not to have seen the student. A campus spokesperson said that the university should focus on adding crosswalks and signage along streets with heavy foot traffic.
Will remove 71 bus stops, including three close to Ohio State University. The move is part of the agency’s Bus Stop Service Improvement Project. The project evaluated COTA bus stops and the spacing between them to improve efficiency.
Due to budgetary concerns and to make the program sustainable, the employee bus pass will no longer be free starting next academic year. The pass will cost $24 annually.
Service could be significantly cut or rates could increase, depending on the new contract. The university’s current contract with Silverado Stages Inc. will expire in a few months.

Ridership has slowly grown from just over eight million in 2009 to 10.2 million in 2012, with that growth continuing or holding reasonably steady over the first few months of 2013.
