SEPTA tapping riders for Instagram submissions

Encouraging riders, using the Instagram photo application, to take photos of SEPTA during their daily use of the system and caption the photo with what riding SEPTA means to them, along with the hash tag #iseptaphilly. Photos are aggregated into a live photo stream on www.iSEPTAPhilly.com.

Up and running, N.Y. MTA offering free transit

To encourage the use of public transit as the region slowly recovers from the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy, NYC Subway and Bus network, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, and Access-a-Ride services will be free for Thursday and Friday.

TriMet ups security, fare enforcement

A new K-9 team was certified to join the TriMet Transit Police Division, bringing the force to 62 officers including four full-time K-9 explosives teams. Additionally, six new fare enforcers start work, joining two others hired earlier this year, which brings the fare enforcement team to the full-time equivalent of 26.

U.S. DOT releases $17M in Hurricane Sandy emergency relief

Represents 100% of the state-requested funds — $10 million from New York, $3 million from Rhode Island and $4 million from North Carolina. Requests from these states are the first to arrive at the U.S. DOT and represent the first installment of federal-aid highway funds to help repair roads, bridges and tunnels in these two states.

Honolulu voters favor rail again

The latest shift in public support, with half of surveyed voters now on board with the project, comes primarily from Filipino-Americans and working-age voters. Three months ago, only 44% of Oahu voters polled said work on the project should continue.

Amtrak partners with Baltimore to upgrade station

Downtown Partnership of Baltimore and Visit Baltimore, among other project partners, will install a large “Baltimore” sign; a cutting-edge screen to show promotional videos about Baltimore; new landscaping for the hill on the north side of the tracks; and attractive new fencing at the top of the hill.
