Four rail improvement projects will reduce congestion along the Empire Corridor from New York City to Niagara Falls and improve travel times and reliability for passengers and freight.

Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority is discussing with the freight rail company the possibility of sharing rail lines. The aim is to accommodate trains with heavier, faster equipment than light rail to better serve riders.

The agreement includes the addition of five commuter trains, while leaving open the possibility of additional trains as rail capacity is created. It will also create the ability of area companies to ship or receive products on double-stack rail cars.
