L.A. transit backers meet, discuss lower sales tax measure threshold

Proposing a change in voter approval of a sales tax from two-thirds to 55% The move follows the close defeat of Los Angeles County’s Measure J, a $90-billion transit sales tax extension. It fell short of a two-thirds "yes" vote by half of one percentage point.

Because of a state law that requires at least a two-thirds majority vote, Los Angeles County’s Measure J, a $90-billion transit sales tax extension that gained 66.1% of the vote, did not pass.

Some oppose L.A. transit tax measure over fares

Opponents say Measure J, which would extend an existing transit tax from 2039 to 2069, providing money to speed completion of at least six rail projects by 2024, would significantly raise fares, cut bus lines or both due to the cost of operating so many new lines ahead of schedule.
