Santa Clara University’s student government is looking into providing an official shuttle bus service to help students get to and from their favorite off-campus locations. The idea is based on the previous “Safe Walk” program, in which students called in to be accompanied to and from any near-campus location.

Virginia Commonwealth University contracted with Groome Transportation to take over the service from GRTC Transit System. The new vehicles are equipped with bike racks and GPS.

The agency’s free shuttles to corporate parks, shopping centers and downtown at many of its stations caused the uptick. In 2010, 444,298 people boarded the shuttles. This year, 935,919 used the buses.
