The California Transit Association presented its Transit Excellence Award to the agency for its seasonal Muir Woods Shuttle program.

The fleet includes 45 vehicles that run on B20 biodiesel. At peak times, there are 20 to 22 vehicles on the road and 12 to 15 in the evenings. Peak school year ridership is between 40,000 to 50,000 passengers a week.

The order comes from a contract awarded to Dynamic Specialty Vehicles, which includes an extension clause if BC Transit chooses to extend the contract on a yearly basis.

Currently, a shuttle is the university's only transportation system to the Med School and affiliated hospitals.

All Sprinters are powered by a 3.0-liter BlueTEC diesel engine and all versions are equipped with a number of Mercedes-Benz safety features — ESP stability and rollover control, ABS anti-lock brakes, Brake Assist and traction control.

Efforts to enhance the safety of its campus shuttle system in the wake of a recent fatal accident is on track, with 39 vehicles equipped with retractable seat belts and the remainder to be completed by month's end.

Will operate six new shuttle buses, transporting more than 15,000 passengers annually.

Since 2004, First Transit has provided fixed route and university shuttle service for Austin residents and University of Texas students. First Transit operates 107 area transit buses, transporting more than eight million passengers annually.

The move is an effort to improve service, quality and reduce greenhouse gases. A $1.6 million federal grant helped pay for the buses, according to IC Bus.
