D.C. Metro issues fare payment RFP

Seeking a fare system designed to process payments directly at the gate using technology like contactless, chip-enabled debit and credit cards, which banks are already distributing to customers; federal identification cards; or smart phones equipped with near-field communication capability; as well as existing SmarTrip cards, according to the agency.

D.C. university campuses selling Metro fare cards

American University and the University of Maryland have partnered with the agency to enable students to purchase and add value to SmarTrip fare cards on campus. Earlier this year, the University of Maryland purchased 5,000 SmarTrip cards for distribution to incoming freshman students.
