The two new bus shelters’ solar panels will power an LED lighting system that provides the time and bus information, and include a diagram explaining how solar power works.

The shelters, built with recyclable materials, are estimated to save taxpayers about $54,000 a year in energy costs.

The solar cells capture sunlight during the day and convert it to electricity to recharge batteries located in each lighting unit. The batteries can hold enough charge to light the shelter for the better part of a night.
