N.C. light rail plan backers: system would prevent sprawl

Supporters of a 17.3-mile route in the Orange-Durham transit plan said it is critical to concentrating economic and residential growth. Opposition claims only 4.3 miles will serve southern Chapel Hill and there’s no plan for a direct link to Research Triangle Park.

Report: Vibrant downtowns linked to greater transit use

Between 2000-2010, metropolitan areas with more vibrant downtowns experienced less sprawl. San Francisco, Miami, and New York experienced sprawl rates of less than 1%, while Memphis, Tenn., Tucson, Ariz., and Phoenix had sprawl rates greater than 10%.
