Two architects are in talks to develop the long-retired Essex Street Trolley Terminal into an underground park that would use fiber optics and other cutting edge technology to nurture tree and plant life.

Granted permission to L.A. Metro to proceed to the preliminary engineering phase. Board Chairman Don Knabe said in a statement that the underground light rail line will connect the Metro Gold, Blue and future Expo lines making it easier for passengers to reach their destinations without having to transfer to a bus or another train.

The $4.2B Westside Subway Extension would extend the system to Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood, a congested and jobs-rich region of Los Angeles. The $1.32B Regional Connector would tie together all light rail lines in downtown L.A., providing major regional north/south and east/west rail line linkages.
