D.C. Metro to invest in security protection against improvised explosive devices

The agency preliminarily endorsed amending the capital budget to include a $351,000 security grant, and authorize Metro to initiate and award a contract to purchase and install the equipment to support the electronic countermeasures system.

Va. man arrested for part in D.C. rail terrorist plot

On Tuesday, a federal grand jury in Alexandria, Va., returned a three-count indictment against Farooque Ahmed, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, charging him with attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization, collecting information to assist in planning a terrorist attack on a transit facility, and attempting to provide material support to help carry out multiple bombings to cause mass casualties at D.C.-area Metrorail stations.

D.C. Metro charging higher fares during peak hours

A 20-cent peak-of-the-peak fee for trips taken between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 4:30 and 6 p.m. weekdays has been implemented to reduce the cost of a SmarTrip card from $5 to $2.50.

DriveCam to install new cameras on D.C. Metro buses

System will capture video and audio inside and outside of Metrobuses, detect when an operator makes a defensive move to avoid an accident, brakes or accelerates suddenly, turns sharply, or is involved in an incident.

Kawasaki to supply D.C. Metro with 428 railcars

Agency received $150M in federal funds for the procurement of the new generation railcars. Of the 428 new cars, 128 will enable the expansion of Metro service on the Dulles rail corridor and 300 will be used to replace the 1000 series cars.

D.C. Metro unveils farecard Website enhancements

Customers with a SmarTrip account can view their card balance and usage history dating back to January 2010. In addition, they can add multiple cards to their account, report a lost or stolen card, request a replacement card or transfer the balance to another registered card.
