With the installation of liquid crystal display (LCD) screens at Metrorail station platforms, Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) can ensure passengers always have access to the most-up-to date transit news.

The LCD displays, which face both the north and southbound tracks, provide passengers with train arrival and departure times for the next three trains and show which trains serve the Green Line and which serve the Orange Line.

“Real-time train arrival information is very important to our customers,” said MDT Director Ysela Llort. “These LCD screens ensure that our passengers are always kept informed regarding our Metrorail service.”

The new screens are the most recent technological improvement made by MDT to its Metrorail system. The LCD screens are scheduled to be installed at all 23 Metrorail stations by late summer 2013. One of the best features is that they allow MDT to publish, update and remove information instantly and remotely. The information displayed on the LCD screen is the same as what passengers are able to view with the MDT Tracker App downloaded to their smart phones.

While one screen displays the train schedules, the one next to it is being used for advertising and public service announcements. The monitors will flash an announcement on screen whenever there is a disruption of service. Additional benefits include alerting passengers about elevator and escalator disruptions, as well as keeping passengers informed about upcoming special events and other changes to their commutes.

The system provides wireless access at Metrorail station platforms for patrons wishing to use their electronic devices while waiting for the train. Wi-Fi is also available within Metrorail cars and has been utilized since 2010.
