NEW YORK CITY — While housing costs are typically key in determining the affordability of a city, transportation costs are also an important part of the equation, according to new data, reported CITYLAB.

Five metros — Washington, San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and Boston — share an obvious trait: good public transportation systems, which makes it possible to reduce car ownership and related expenses. These same cities also rank near the top in terms of both commuter transit share and households without vehicles, according to the report.
