The Metropolitan Atlanta Regional Transit Authority (MARTA) board of directors voted this week to support the creation of a regional planning board.

The 18-member board, to be made up of political and transportation leaders, as well as MARTA personnel, will spend the next two years researching Atlanta’s transit issues.

The board’s responsibility will be to recommend ways to increase funding for public transit and improve coordination among transportation providers in the area.

According to the Atlanta Jounal-Constitution, the new planning board could eventually create a regional transit agency that would oversee or take over MARTA's rail and bus network and other systems in the metro-Atlanta area.

Meanwhile, the MARTA board selected Richard McCrillis, the agency’s chief financial officer, to serve as interim general manager until a permanent replacement is found for outgoing chief Nathaniel Ford.
