Labor unions, MTS establish memorial funds

San Diego-based Metropolitan Transit System (MTS); along with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 465; and the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1309, established two memorial funds to help the families of the victims of Tuesday’s fatal workplace violence.

“We are doing all that we can to help the families involved in this tragic incident,” said Paul Jablonski, chief executive officer of MTS. “With the organized unions support, I think these memorial funds can go a long way to help the Mwangi and Stevenson families. And we will continue to do all that we can to help support them and help them recover from this tragedy.”

Although neither of the victims were a part of the ATU, the union also joined in the effort to raise money for the families.

Donations can be made to either the Ben N. Mwangi Memorial Fund or the Michael B. Stevenson Memorial Fund by sending checks or money orders payable to the funds. Checks should be sent to the Metropolitan Transit System, c/o Memorial Funds, 1255 Imperial Avenue, Suite 1000, San Diego, CA 92101.
