Setra S 417 prepared for 2010 emission standards
First Setra with SCR technology will be featured at the 2010 UMA Motorcoach Expo in Las Vegas.
The Setra S 417 from Daimler Buses North America is prepared to meet the stringent 2010 EPA emission standards, according to the company, by utilizing the Detroit Diesel DD13, which incorporates proven BlueTec emissions technology.
Daimler's Commercial Vehicle Group has implemented this advanced technology over the past five years in more than 200,000 Mercedes-Benz BlueTec Trucks.
"With the combined experience of Daimler's Commercial Vehicle Group and approximately 1,000 DD13 engines in the market today, Daimler Buses will be the best positioned with reliable and proven engine technology," said Patrick Scully, chief commercial officer for Daimler Buses North America.
The cornerstone of BlueTec is the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) process, which takes the exhaust from the engine and routes it through the After Treatment System where the particulate matter is "scrubbed" through the diesel particulate filter and is then subsequently routed through the SCR filter, where small doses of diesel emission fluid (DEF) address the NOx (oxides of nitrogen) emissions.
Utilizing BlueTec technology to reduce NOx emissions, the Setra S 417 will be able to reduce dependency on exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Less EGR means less heat rejection and greater component reliability, helping reduce fan on-time and its related fuel consumption, cycle wear and noise, according to Daimler Buses North America
The Setra S 417 will also feature a separate DEF tank and injection system. The DEF tank will be located immediately adjacent to the diesel tank, making refills easy and efficient. The DEF will be consumed at a rate of approximately 2 percent vs. fuel usage, thus one gallon of DEF is used about every 300 miles allowing about 4,500 miles to 5,000 miles between DEF fill-ups with a 15-gallon DEF tank.
A Davco Fuel Pro filter and need release coolant filter, providing for extended maintenance intervals, will also standard on the S 417.
The first Setra S 417 with SCR technology will be featured at the 2010 UMA Motorcoach Expo in Las Vegas.
