Louisiana-based Monroe Transit System, operated by First Transit, was awarded the 2009 Environmental Leadership Program Municipality Achievement Award in pollution prevention by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

"I am extremely proud of the work Monroe Transit has put into their operations and happy to be recognized for our contributions," said Brad Thomas, president of First Transit and First Services. "By using innovative technology to improve the impact on the environment, we can ultimately contribute to keeping our planet clean while continuing to provide efficient and reliable service."

By introducing the use of biodiesel fuel, purchasing buses with particulate filters and low emission vehicle ratings, and promoting the benefits of transit ridership, Monroe Transit has drastically improved air quality in their area and has been an example of what it takes to be environmentally conscious.
