The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) released $64.5 million in federal stimulus funds to Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) for Metrorail and Metromover facility upgrades, the purchase of hybrid buses and other significant infrastructure projects for the transit system.

Of the total $64.5 million, $9.7 million will be allocated to 24 Miami-Dade municipalities for transit related projects within their respective municipal boundaries.

"This federal stimulus funding will assist the department to address long-standing infrastructure upgrades needed to maintain a reliable transit system," said MDT Director Harpal Kapoor.

Miami-Dade Transit applied for the FTA grants in May 2009 and was awaiting the grant award to be able to program the money to start the projects.
