The Texas Transit Association (TTA) named Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) the 2010 Outstanding Metropolitan Transit Authority.

DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas and DART Board Chair Bill Velasco accepted the award during a luncheon at the TTA Annual Conference held in Corpus Christi On Tuesday.

The TTA award is given to a metropolitan public transportation system that has designed and implemented programs that demonstrate innovative concepts or effective problem-solving techniques. The agency was recognized for the successful launch of the first phase of the Green Line in September 2009. DART previously won the award in 2006.

Thomas was also honored at the event as the 2010 Friend of Texas Transit Award winner by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Thomas, who has held top job at DART since 2001, was cited for his overall management of the agency and his oversight of the largest light rail expansion in North America.
