The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is evaluating a new amenity for customers by installing vending machines at select rail stations that sell popular magazines.

The vending machines, which are from Time Inc. and serviced by The Classic Group, dispense magazines such as People, Time, Sports Illustrated and Entertainment Weekly at prices ranging from $3.50 to $5.50.

The vending machines accept credit cards and cash.

The evaluation period will run for six months with an option to extend. By installing the machines for an evaluation period, CTA and the vendor can assess the suitability of the magazines offered, the customer response and the feasibility of installing the machines in other locations.

The contract with The Classic Group was awarded through the competitive bid process. The Classic Group is responsible for the repair/maintenance of the equipment. CTA is guaranteed $500 per month/per machine.

CTA also is considering vending machines that will dispense DVDs and electronics at select rail locations.
