Clemson U. expands demand-response service at night

Clemson University will expand its nighttime demand-response (door-to-door) transportation service to meet increasing student requests and enhance campus safety. This expanded service, known as Tiger Transit, will run from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. seven days a week.

Tiger Transit will complement the daytime campus bus service provided by Clemson Area Transit, which runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Formerly known as the safety escort service, Tiger Transit will continue to be provided by the Clemson University Police Department's Auxiliary Student Patrol. The service allows students and employees to call for transportation to and from main campus destinations between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Tiger Transit features three new ADA-compliant shuttles, increased student staffing and a dedicated dispatch line for more responsive and efficient service.

"Students have been pushing for a more convenient, safer transportation method to get around campus at night," said Ben Winter, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Pickens and chairman of the Clemson Transit Continuity Council. "Tiger Transit will provide larger shuttles, which will be clearly marked, and will provide more direct transportation to parking lots and on-campus housing."

Tiger Transit has the endorsement of graduate and undergraduate student governments, as well as the Clemson Transit Continuity Council, a group of students tasked with providing input on student transit-related issues.
